Problem solving is an essential tool of a photographers kit. Never is the solution more HDR. Molten ketchup in my eyes, washed out with lemon juice and lighter fluid and lite on fire with an old cigar is more pleasant to my eyes than anything in HDR.
So why the hate? I've never done anything in HDR, and sure it's kinda silly sometimes. But it can be well used. So...why do you hate it so much? Just curious!
Well, like most things "creative" in nature - everything has a certain amount of subjectivity. That being said, some things can easily be classified as "over done" or even "gimmick". For me, when the HDR is so distracting that its all you notice (which is very often) -- and by overdone I mean is looks as if the image were shining with a weird, unnatural glow -- then its completely unnecessary. Photography is about subject matter, not technique. The most lasting photos are those that resonate and its hard to get a message from an image when you're eyes are bleeding (ok, that was sarcastic).
Of course any of these things I list on this site aren't wrong in and of themselves, my issue is more to do with when those techniques and tools are so overused or overdone that they take away from any subject matter or are the _only_ thing a photographer does. Photographer is an exploration and development and we all try things here and there, but hopefully we move beyond them and start to find unique and powerful ways to say a thousand things.
